Write product descriptions for 50 items in an afternoon
Short answer: Put the facts for each product in a spreadsheet, write one model description yourself, then paste it with 10 rows at a time into an AI assistant. Check every description against your spreadsheet before publishing. Copy ingredients, allergens and health claims from the label word for word; never let AI write them.

A batch method for writing accurate, on-brand product descriptions with AI from your own spec notes, in batches of 10, without the generic filler.
Who it's for
Shop owners, makers and food producers who sell online (Shopify, Etsy, Square Online, a local delivery menu) and have a backlog of items with thin or missing descriptions.
The situation today
- New stock arrives faster than descriptions get written, so items go live with a name, a price and nothing else.
- Copy-pasted manufacturer text reads like everyone else's and leaves out what your customers actually ask about.
- Rough estimate: 10 to 15 minutes per item to write a decent description from scratch.
Time figures marked "rough estimate" are our estimates, not survey data.
The AI-assisted workflow
Step by step
- Make a simple spreadsheet: product name, size or weight, materials or ingredients, what it's for, and one thing customers always ask about it. Facts only.
- Write one 'gold standard' description yourself for your best-selling item. It teaches the AI your voice.
- Paste the gold standard, the prompt below and 10 rows at a time. Smaller batches mean fewer mistakes.
- Check every description against the spreadsheet: sizes, materials, ingredients and care instructions. Delete anything the AI added.
- Paste them into your store and fix one batch a day until the backlog is gone.
Copy-paste prompt
You write product descriptions for my [type of shop], which sells to [who buys from you]. Here is one description I wrote, in my voice: "[paste your best description]" Write a description for each product below, in the same voice. For each: one opening line about who it's for or when you'd use it, 2-3 short sentences or bullets with the facts, and one line answering the question customers ask most. Rules: use only the facts in the table. Do not add materials, sizes, ingredients, health claims, awards or 'handmade' unless the table says so. If a fact is missing, write [CHECK]. 40-80 words each. Products (name | size | materials/ingredients | use | common question): [paste 10 rows]
Works in any AI chat assistant. Replace everything in [brackets].

Watch-outs
- Food and body products: never let AI write ingredient, allergen, nutrition or health claims. Copy those from your label or supplier spec sheet, word for word. The FDA lists nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame.
- Don't claim 'handmade', 'organic', 'made in the USA' or similar unless it's true and you can back it up; those words carry legal meaning.
- Some customers dislike obviously AI-written marketing. Edit until it sounds like you talking about the product.
When not to use AI
- Regulated products (supplements, cosmetics with claims, children's products with safety requirements) where wording has to match compliance documents. Use the approved wording.

Quick answers
Can I use AI to write product descriptions?
Yes, if you give it the facts and check every description against them before publishing. Never let it invent materials, sizes, ingredients or claims.
How long should a product description be?
For most small shops, 40 to 80 words covers who it's for, the key facts and the most common question. Longer is fine for complex items.
